Should you consider Mr Chan for shoulder surgery? My experience strongly suggests YES for three reasons, 1. He listened to my experience to understand the physical problem and what issues it was causing in my daily life - he actually listened and did not interrupt trying to put his spin on things, unlike previous surgeons I have seen. 2. He used the latest techniques with the most effective plate for my collar bone, unlike the generic plate i had placed previous. 3. Most importantly, he advised on aftercare using a risk based approach where I was able to negotiate what I wanted to do whilst knowing the risks. Plus he is just nice guy that you feel at ease with. If you met him at a party, i am sure you would have no idea he is an expert surgeon. You would just think he is a nice guy. I have experience of three shoulder surgeons and Mr Chan was the most effective and pleasant by a very long distance.

I’m a competitive weightlifter, and also a doctor. I had the misfortune of rupturing my biceps 7 weeks ago, and at the time of writing this, am 6 weeks post op. Being in the medical profession, of course I asked orthopaedic colleagues for recommendations of the best surgeon, in the West Midlands, to perform my biceps repair. For me it was particularly important the repair was done both effectively, and in a timely fashion, for the very best outcome, so that I can return to my sport, which will inevitably push the repair to its limits. Mr Chan featured in almost every one of these aforementioned discussions, therefore, of course, I chose to be referred to him for my operation. I cannot be more pleased with this decision. He arranged for me to have an ultrasound scan the very same day I saw him in the outpatient clinic, reviewed the scan immediately afterwards, and together we made a decision to proceed. I had the repair within 7 days of the injury which is quite remarkable. The post operative care was excellent. Mr Chan came to explain what he had done, in person, on the ward, before I was discharged home later the same day. The supraclavicular nerve block that was performed in theatre meant that I was in no pain whatsoever that day. After 1 week post op, I was out of the sling, after 2 weeks I had regained full range of motion and was completely pain free. By week 3 I was lifting light, day to day objects. By week 4 I was driving, and going about my usual daily tasks without hindrance. By week 5 I began gentle triceps resistance exercises, and now at week 6, I have commenced gentle back resistance exercises, which involve the biceps, but not in isolation. It looks as if I’m well on track to be back to my full capability by the 4 month mark as predicted. I can confidently say that Mr Chan is extremely efficient, most polite, and highly respected amongst his colleagues as a meticulous surgeon and a consummate professional. I fully recommend him, both professionally, and personally.

On meeting Mr. Chan you feel at ease with his welcoming smile and most helpful and detailed history taking and very gentle physical examination. All this is only a small part of his Professional Surgical Skills and very helpful postoperative care and follow up. It was a privilege to be under the care of Mr. Samuel Chan with 2 bad shoulders. One is now in perfect working order following surgery. I would not hesitate to recommend Samuel Chan to family and friends and acquaintances. And my sincere wished for him to continue his brilliant and most rewarding career to all his patients - including myself

If you want great care then look no further than Mr Samuel Chan!! I suffered from a frozen shoulder which came about by non movement of my arm following a broken wrist. Mr Chan looked after me paying deep attention to my case and guiding me on what to do at every check up. He arranged for physiotherapy and suggested various methods of unfreezing the shoulder muscles. All in all this doctor is caring, perceptive and kind. He listens attentively and explains the therapy in layman terms. I fully recommend this doctor and believe that you, the patient, will have a great experience!!
